In Print used textbook copy barcodes:

You can print copy barcode labels based on the contents of a Resource List or Copy Category, a file or list of barcode numbers, or the acquisition date and time of the copies.

note You cannot print barcode labels for barcodes longer than 14 characters.

  1. If you are a district textbooks manager, select the district or a single school from the For list.
Note: If you select the district: The printing is limited to the first 1,000 qualifying barcode labels. In addition, you cannot select by Copy Category or Barcode List.
  2. From the Select by list, select a method for identifying the copies to include:
    • List: If you have multiple Resource Lists, select the one needing the labels.
To review the contents of the Resource List, click View List.
    • Copy Category: Select a copy category from the list.
    • Barcode List: Either create a new list, or select an existing barcode file:
      • To create a new list, place the cursor in the Create a barcode list box and scan the barcodes, or type them in and click Add. To remove a barcode number from the list, select it and click Remove.
      • To select an existing file, click Browse to locate and select your file.
    • Barcode Range: Enter the starting and ending numbers of the range in the boxes. Destiny prints only barcodes that are in use; it skips any barcodes in the range that are unused.
      • You can leave both boxes blank to include all the barcodes in use in the defined barcode symbology.
      • If you leave the first box blank and enter a number in the second box, the printing includes all used barcodes up to and including the number in the second box.
      • If you enter a number in the first box and leave the second box blank, the printing includes that number and all those after it.
    • Date/Time Copies Added
  3. If you chose Date/Time Copies Added, enter a beginning date and time next to From and an ending date and time next to To. Click the get calendar icon for a calendar.
You can omit one or both of the times to have Destiny use the beginning or ending of the From and To dates, respectively.

If you chose List or Copy Category, entering a date is optional. This allows you to further limit the printing. If you leave it blank, Destiny ignores the dates the copies were added.
  4. Select any of the check boxes to include additional information on the labels.
Barcode labels always have the scannable barcode and the eye-readable number.
  5. Select your label stock and the starting label.
  6. Click Run Reports .
  7. When the Report Manager opens, click View to open the label report.
  8. After positioning the label stock in your printer, use Adobe Reader's toolbar button or menu command to print the labels.

In Print unused textbook copy barcodes:

  1. If you are a district textbooks manager, select a single site from the list.
  2. Enter the quantity of labels needed.
  3. Enter the starting barcode number.
You can enter your highest barcode number, or, if you would like to fill gaps in your number sequence, enter a lower number. Destiny prints only barcode numbers that are not in use; it skips any used barcode numbers.

To discover (and copy, if desired) your next available barcode number, click the symbology name in brackets.

Note: If the barcode number you enter is more than 7 characters, it must match the symbology that appears in brackets. If it does not, you will need to change the symbology in Site Configuration before generating the barcodes.
  4. Select the Include check box to print your site or district name on the label.
  5. Select your label stock and the starting label.
  6. Click Run Reports .
  7. When the Report Manager opens, click View to open the label report.
  8. After positioning your label stock in the printer, use Adobe Reader's toolbar button or the menu command to print the labels.

Do I need to test them?

The first time you print barcode labels, print a few samples on plain paper, and do the following:

  • Make sure that the barcode is centered on the label. (Scanners require some white space at either end of the vertical barcode lines.)
If not, adjust the offsets and try again. When you print, Destiny saves the offset settings you used so that you do not have to set them again.
  • Make sure that your scanner, PHD, or wireless handheld device can read the barcodes. The quality of the barcode varies from printer to printer; some older printers cannot produce scanner-readable barcodes.

What is included on the label?

Unused labels contain the copy's scannable barcode, the eye-readable number, and, if selected, the site or district name.

Used labels contain the copy's scannable barcode, the eye-readable number, and any of the five optional fields:

  • Site name or district name
  • Title (up to 20 characters)
  • Author (up to 20 characters)
  • Location (up to 30 characters)

Teacher's editions have TE before the title.
Resource kits have RK before the title.

For example, to start printing on the second label of the third row of a 3 × 10 sheet, enter 8.

In what order are the barcode labels printed?

Used labels are printed alphabetically by title, subsorted by the author.

Unused labels are printed in barcode number order.

The printing is not centered on the label.

How do I correct this?

Use the Printer offsets to fine-tune the alignment of the printing on the labels. The Horizontal and Vertical offsets let you adjust the left and top margins, respectively. Each increment is equal to 1/10th of a millimeter. Keep in mind that the offsets needed for each label stock vary from printer to printer.

note The first time you select a label stock, print a few tests on plain paper to ensure that the printing is aligned correctly.

When you print, Destiny saves the offset settings you used so that you do not have to set them again.

For the Horizontal setting, locate your stock in the following table and enter a number within the allowable range:

Item # Minimum settings Maximum setting
Avery 5160 -10 10
Sagebrush 0370-00000001 -10 10
University 9-62450-16 -23 22

For the Vertical setting:

Item # Minimum setting Maximum setting
Avery 5160 -36 36
Sagebrush 0370-00000001 -49 49
University 9-62450-16 -36 36

note Any offsets you define for barcode labels are in addition to the unprintable area defined in your printer's properties.
